Togo's security forces on Thursday carried out a simulated jihadist attack in the capital Lome, training to counter a hostage-taking as the country faces increasing threats. Togo's Security Minister General Damehame Yark said the exercise was part of "measures so that we can face this threat" in the region.

Young protesters clashed on Thursday with security forces in the Guinean capital Conakry after a banned group called for demonstrations against the country's ruling junta, an AFP reporter saw. The coalition had called for peaceful demonstrations to take place in Conakry on Thursday, followed by nationwide protests on October 26.

London-listed ruby mining giant Gemfields said Thursday it has ceased operations at a mine in northern Mozambique's restive Cabo Delgado province following a jihadist attack at a neighbouring site. Following the attack, Gemfields "has initiated the process of evacuating operational employees and contractors, and therefore mining operations at the site have ceased", it said in a statement.

Rebels killed at least seven people and kidnapped a nurse during an attack overnight Wednesday in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, targeting two health centres, local sources said. The attackers first set fire to the health centre, where they killed three people, before spreading terror in the centre of the town, where three more killings were reported.
