A KwaZulu-Natal woman proved that heritage belongs to everyone when she threw herself fully into a Zulu dance performance at a Heritage Day celebration at her workplace. Joelene Haasbroek, who is not Zulu, brought the energy of the occasion to life in a way that had her colleagues cheering and the internet talking. In the clip posted to her Instagram account @joelene_haasbroek on 24 September 2026, Joelene is dressed in a blue traditional skirt, a matching doek and a patterned scarf.
A Rainbow Nation moment
She holds her own alongside a male traditional dancer, moving through the paved courtyard with the kind of confidence that comes from someone who has clearly been looking forward to this moment. Her colleagues, many of them dressed in South African traditional attire from various cultures, surround her and cheer her on throughout.

How impromptu Heritage Day dance moves sparked nationwide celebration
The Briefly News team spoke with Joelene, who shared the story behind her energetic performance, how it felt to receive such overwhelming support from her colleagues, and the deeper personal journey that makes her dancing so special.
We asked if she freestyled her viral dance moves, and she responded:
“Honestly, it was completely freestyle! I didn’t have a proper choreography or routine planned. I just observed other people throughout the year, and the energy of the moment was so good, and I just went with it. We did not even know we would have to do something on the day; we just thought it would be a best-dressed, so it was definitely impromptu.”
The team asked how it felt to receive such loud cheers and support from the crowd. She shared:
“It was honestly such an incredible feeling! Hearing everyone cheering and seeing my colleagues getting so excited gave me even more confidence and energy to just go for it. I wasn’t expecting such a big reaction at all, so it was definitely one of those moments I’ll never forget. I also think no one expected those dance moves, and that is the reason for everyone's reactions.”
When asked what inspired her to participate and bring so much positive energy. Joelene said:
“For me, this Heritage Day was about celebrating culture, having fun and bringing people together. I’ve always been someone who loves performing, dancing and creating an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy themselves. I also wanted to embrace and appreciate a culture different from my own in a respectful way and, most importantly, just celebrate the diversity that makes South Africa so beautiful. I definitely got my bubbly energy from my mom cause she would've done the same! And you know what! Life is too short; you will get your haters all over social media about that video, but honestly, it was a moment I would always remember. And it was a really ‘in-the-moment’ and last-minute decision to do those dance moves.”
She also shared a deeply personal milestone behind her movement:
“One thing that also made the moment quite special for me is that I actually have drop foot from a car accident I had when I was younger, which left my right foot completely paralysed. So dancing isn’t always something that comes easily for me and is often quite challenging. But I honestly just got caught up in the moment, surrounded by the most cheerful people, the excitement of the day and the incredible energy around me, and I just went for it. I truly believe God has given me the gift of making people smile, bringing joy and hopefully inspiring others. I’ve always been someone who loves making people laugh and bringing positive energy wherever I go, and I think this was just another moment where I saw the opportunity to do so. Life is too short to be grumpy and boring. It’s okay to put yourself out there, be a little silly, have fun and enjoy the moment. You never know who might need that little bit of joy in their day.”

Heritage Day, celebrated across South Africa on 24 September each year, is a public holiday dedicated to honouring the country's diverse cultures and traditions. Joelene's performance was a reminder of what that diversity can look like when it is embraced freely and without reservation.
