SA Weather Warning: Dangerous Monday as Heavy Rain and Lightning Sweep Provinces

South Africa is bracing for a rough Monday as severe storms, heavy rain and dangerous lightning sweep across several provinces on 28 September 2026.
The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning for severe thunderstorms, covering the Mpumalanga Highveld, south-western parts of Limpopo and most of Gauteng. The warning flags heavy downpours, strong and damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning. Localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas and bridges is expected, along with potential damage to settlements and infrastructure.

Province-by-province forecast
In Gauteng, expect partly cloudy and warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers, turning hot in the extreme north. The UVB Sunburn Index is rated High.
Mpumalanga will see morning fog along the escarpment, clearing to cloudy and cool to cold conditions with isolated showers and scattered thundershowers over the Highveld.
Limpopo faces morning fog along the escarpment, then partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm weather with isolated showers and thundershowers, more scattered in the extreme south. The east will remain cloudy.
North West residents can expect fine and warm to hot conditions, turning partly cloudy in the east with isolated showers and thundershowers developing.
The Free State will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers concentrated in the east, where cloud cover will be thicker.
The Northern Cape will mostly stay fine, windy and cool to warm, though hot along the northern coast. The south-east will see some morning cloud. Coastal winds will be moderate southerly to south-easterly, strengthening to fresh to strong by the afternoon.
The Western Cape will be partly cloudy in the east, cold in places, with fine and cool conditions elsewhere and warmth over the West Coast District. Coastal winds will be moderate south-easterly to easterly, turning strong to near gale-force along the south-west coast. The UVB Sunburn Index there is rated Very High.
In the Eastern Cape, both the western and eastern halves face cloudy and cold to cool conditions. The western half has a chance of light rain along the coast in the morning, clearing to partly cloudy in the afternoon. The eastern half will see isolated showers and rain in the extreme east. Coastal winds will be moderate south-westerly throughout.
KwaZulu-Natal starts with morning fog in the south-west, then turns cloudy and cold to cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the south. Coastal winds will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly. The UVB Sunburn Index is rated Low.
Fire danger warning
Beyond the storm threats, fire danger is a serious concern on Monday. Extremely high fire danger conditions are forecast for the Limpopo Valley and Bushveld, the central parts of Limpopo, and the Moses Kotane Local Municipality in the North West. The South African Weather Service urged residents in these areas to take precautions.
