South Africa is facing a starkly divided weather pattern this week, according to the latest regional reports from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). While the interior and eastern provinces cope with intense thunderstorm systems, coastal regions vary wildly from wet, brisk conditions to warm sunshine.
The Interior & Highveld
The interior region—including Gauteng, the Free State, and North West—features warm conditions early in the week before transitioning into an intense, rainy mid-week period.
The South African Weather Service has highlighted active system warnings moving across the central interior, western Free State, and North West. Authorities advise residents to prepare for severe thunderstorms capable of bringing heavy downpours, excessive lightning, hail, and localised flooding to low-lying roads and bridges. Temperatures in these areas will drop significantly by Tuesday and Wednesday during the peak of the rainfall.

In Johannesburg, Monday will start warm with a high of 30°C (86°F) and a low of 19°C (66°F) alongside afternoon cloud cover and a late thunderstorm risk. By Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions will turn noticeably cooler and chilly, dropping to highs of 25°C and 23°C with steady rain showers. Skies will gradually clear toward Thursday and Friday, reaching a pleasant 26°C, before cooling down again over the weekend.
The East Coast & subtropical areas
A wet and brisk week lies ahead for KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
Durban and surrounding coastal towns are seeing steady, widespread rain showers and localised coastal winds moving through. Daytime temperatures along the coast will stay relatively cool, lingering between 17°C and 20°C for the first half of the week. Further north in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, conditions remain warmer—reaching highs of up to 31°C—but stay highly prone to scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers.
The South & West Coast
In stark contrast to the rest of the country, Cape Town and the Western Cape interior will enjoy mostly clear, stable, and sunny skies for the majority of the week.
Although a brisk breeze will pick up along the Cape coast, temperatures are on a steady upward climb. The region starts at a comfortable 22°C on Monday and will reach up to a warm 29°C by mid-week, standing as the main exception to the stormy conditions affecting the rest of South Africa.
