Weather Alert: Severe Storms, Hail and Lightning Expected in Two Provinces

SOUTH AFRICA - South Africa is bracing for a mixed weather day, with severe thunderstorm warnings, fog patches and warm sunshine all on the cards depending on where you live.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across parts of two provinces. The warning covers the western and southern portions of the Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape, as well as the Central Karoo and West Coast districts in the Western Cape.

Residents in those areas can expect excessive lightning, small hail and strong, gusty winds. Extremely high fire danger conditions are also anticipated over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

Inland provinces face afternoon showers

Gauteng will be partly cloudy and warm throughout the day, but residents should be cautious outdoors as the UVB sunburn index is rated very high. Mpumalanga will wake up to fog patches along the escarpment before conditions clear into a partly cloudy and cool to warm afternoon, with isolated showers and thundershowers likely except in the extreme south-west.

Limpopo will start cloudy in the east, while the rest of the province enjoys partly cloudy and warm weather. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected over parts of the east and south-west. North West begins fine and warm before cloud builds in the afternoon, bringing isolated showers and thundershowers to the east.

The Free State will follow a similar pattern, starting fine and warm before partial cloud develops later in the day. The Northern Cape faces a more active forecast, with isolated to scattered showers over the south-eastern and central regions, and widespread showers and thundershowers forecast for the western areas and southern high ground.

Eastern Cape and KZN on fog and shower watch

The Western Cape's Little Karoo and Central Karoo will see morning cloud giving way to widespread afternoon showers and thundershowers. The rest of the province can expect cloudy and warm conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers developing through the day.

In the Eastern Cape, the western half will have morning fog in the south before clearing into fine and cool to warm weather. Cloud will build later, bringing scattered showers and thundershowers, though coastal areas should see only isolated activity. The eastern half starts fine and warm before cloud moves in with isolated showers and thundershowers later.

KwaZulu-Natal will have fog over the interior in the morning, clearing to partly cloudy and warm conditions. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in the extreme south-west and north-east.
