South Africa Weather Forecast: KZN Faces Thunderstorms and Possible Flooding

SOUTH AFRICA - South Africans can expect a mix of sunshine, cloud, rain and thunderstorms on Monday, 21 September 2026, with KwaZulu-Natal facing the biggest weather warning.According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning includes the possibility of heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning, which could result in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements.

The province is expected to be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers. Morning fog is also expected over the interior.

Durban is forecast to reach a maximum of 25°C, while Richards Bay could reach 28°C. Pietermaritzburg is expected to experience morning fog before scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers.

Thunderstorms expected in several provinces

The unsettled weather will not be limited to KwaZulu-Natal. Gauteng is expected to be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers. Johannesburg could reach 23°C, while Pretoria is forecast to reach 25°C.

The North West and Free State are also expected to experience isolated showers and thundershowers after cloudy conditions in the morning.

Parts of Mpumalanga could experience morning drizzle and fog along the escarpment, followed by isolated rain and showers. The Lowveld is expected to be cloudy and warm.

The Eastern Cape will also see partly cloudy and cool conditions, with fog in places and isolated showers and thundershowers. Some areas of the province could experience scattered storms.

Hot weather expected in parts of Western Cape

The Western Cape will have a contrasting forecast. Cape Town is expected to be fine and could reach 31°C, while George is forecast to reach 21°C. The province's south coast could experience morning cloud, while isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in the north-east.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape is expected to be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers. Upington could reach 27°C.

SAWS has also warned of extremely high fire-danger conditions over the Nama-Khoi Municipality in the Northern Cape.

The weather service forecast is updated several times a day, meaning conditions and warnings could change.
