SA Weather Service Warns of Floods, Snow and Damaging Winds Across Several Provinces

South Africa is bracing for a rough Friday, with the South African Weather Service issuing a string of severe weather warnings covering rain, flooding, snow and damaging winds across much of the country on 18 September.
KwaZulu-Natal is expected to bear the worst of the conditions. An Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain covers the province's coastline and adjacent interior up to Richards Bay. Authorities cautioned that rapidly rising streams and deep floodwaters could pose a serious danger to life, with entire communities at risk of displacement and losses of livestock and livelihoods. A Yellow Level 4 warning is in place for the eastern and southern parts of the province, while severe thunderstorms are possible in the north-west.
Eastern Cape faces snow and flooding
The Eastern Cape is dealing with a dangerous combination of flooding and plunging temperatures. An Orange Level 5 warning covers the Port St Johns, Ingquza Hill, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Ntabankulu municipalities, where roads, bridges and essential services could be disrupted. A Yellow Level 2 snow warning has been issued for the Matatiele and Elundini municipalities, with difficult driving conditions and risks to vulnerable livestock expected on the north-eastern high ground.

Thunderstorms, wind and snow warnings across the country
The Northern Cape and Free State are in line for heavy downpours, damaging winds, lightning and hail. A Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms covers the extreme east-central Northern Cape, with localised flooding and infrastructure damage among the anticipated impacts.
Gauteng can expect cloudy skies and isolated showers, with rain chances sitting at around 30%. Mpumalanga and Limpopo will see scattered storms, particularly in their southern and eastern areas.
In the west, a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds has been issued for southern and western parts of the Northern Cape and northern parts of the Western Cape, where near-gale south-easterly winds are forecast along the coast. Residents in those areas are warned of possible damage to settlements and disruptions to electricity and communications.
South Africans in affected provinces are urged to avoid flooded roads, stay indoors during severe thunderstorms and monitor updates from the South African Weather Service.
