Tuesday Weather: SA Braces for Thunderstorms, Showers and Foggy Conditions

SOUTH AFRICA - South Africans can expect a mix of foggy mornings, warm temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms across several parts of the country on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in several provinces, but no impact-based severe weather warnings, fire danger warnings or advisories have been issued.

Gauteng, North West and Free State

Gauteng will be partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers developing during the afternoon. Johannesburg residents can expect a partly sunny day, with a high of 23°C.

The North West will also see partly cloudy conditions, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms.In the Free State, patches of morning fog are expected in the east and along the Lesotho border. The province will then become partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

Mpumalanga and Limpopo

Mpumalanga will start with cloudy conditions in some areas, while fog is expected over parts of the Highveld. The weather will become partly cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers. The Lowveld will remain warmer.

Limpopo could see morning cloud, drizzle and fog along the escarpment. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over the central and south-eastern parts of the province later in the day.

Northern Cape and Western Cape

The Northern Cape will have morning fog in the south before becoming partly cloudy and cool to warm.

Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected across most of the province, except the north-west.

The Western Cape will start with cloudy conditions and morning fog along the south coast. It will then become partly cloudy and warm to hot. Cape Town could see the warmest temperatures on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 28°C.

Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected across parts of the province, although the extreme south-west should remain dry.

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape could see afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The western half will be partly cloudy and warm after morning fog south of the escarpment, with scattered thunderstorms expected from the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal will start Tuesday with morning fog over the interior before becoming partly cloudy and cool to warm.

Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected, while coastal winds will change direction throughout the day.
