ALBANY, NEW YORK — A federal court in Albany has sentenced Marcell Meyer, a 45-year-old South African national originally from KwaZulu-Natal, to 12 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse offences. US District Judge Anthony J Brindisi imposed the sentence alongside a mandatory five-year period of supervised release.

According to News24, Meyer, who had been residing in Sackets Harbor, New York, was apprehended as part of an undercover operation run by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Investigators confirmed he transmitted illegal material through a messaging application to an agent he believed to be a 13-year-old child. Further unlawful files were subsequently recovered from his mobile phone during the operation.

Dairy farm arrest sparked community unrest

Meyer's arrest in March 2024, carried out at North Harbor Dairy, drew significant attention across New York state. While federal agents were executing the warrant, seven additional farm workers and a local family were also detained on immigration-related violations. The operation prompted public demonstrations, with community members and local school officials voicing concern over how the situation unfolded.

First Assistant US Attorney John A Sarcone III addressed the outcome directly, saying the length of the sentence ensures Meyer will serve substantial prison time before any deportation process can begin.

Sentence includes restitution and deportation

Beyond the custodial term, Meyer's sentencing conditions include mandatory registration as a sex offender and a restitution order of $21,000, approximately R334,500, payable to victims. Upon completing his prison sentence, Meyer will face immediate deportation proceedings back to South Africa.
