WESTERN CAPE — A 16-year-old boy from Malmesbury has been arrested following a cross-border investigation that allegedly connected him to "764," a violent international online network known for the sexual exploitation of children.

The South African Police Service arrested the teenager on Monday, 18 August 2025, on charges related to accessing, possessing, facilitating and downloading child sexual abuse material. He was expected to appear before the Malmesbury Magistrates' Court the following day.

FBI intelligence sparks South African investigation

The investigation was triggered after the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Embassy and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children shared intelligence with South African authorities. That intelligence pointed to a suspect within South Africa allegedly linked to the "764" network.

The "764" networks are described by authorities as violent online communities that target vulnerable minors through coercion, blackmail and manipulation, pressuring victims into producing sexual abuse material. These networks have also been linked to acts of extreme violence, including the torture and killing of animals.

SAPS' National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations Team acted on the US intelligence, eventually tracing the teenager to a residential address in Malmesbury. The operation drew on several specialised units, including the Head Office Occult Unit, the Paarl Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the Paarl K9 Unit and the Western Cape Crime Scene Investigation Unit. FBI agents and Homeland Security Investigations officials attached to the US Embassy participated directly in the operation.
