WESTERN CAPE — Four suspects, including an active police constable, were arrested on Sunday, 16 August 2026, following a targeted operation against an extortion ring that had been preying on foreign-owned businesses in the Stellenbosch area.
The takedown was carried out in Bellville by provincial serious violent crime detectives, working alongside Crime Intelligence, the Drone Unit, the National Prosecuting Authority, City of Cape Town security officials, and the Financial Intelligence Centre.
Who was arrested and what they allegedly did
Three of the four suspects are family members from Nyanga — a father aged 47 and his two sons, aged 23 and 27 — one of whom is a serving police constable. The fourth suspect, aged 53, is a Somalian businessman who allegedly collected extortion payments on the ring's behalf.

Investigators allege that the group extorted more than 50 Somali and Ethiopian business owners operating in the Khayamandi township and the broader Stellenbosch area. The Somalian businessman allegedly gathered fixed sums from victims on set dates each month, funnelling the cash back to the other suspects on a regular basis.
During the operation, police seized R120 000 in cash, several firearms, and four vehicles used in connection with the alleged crimes, with a combined estimated value of R3 million.
Court appearance and charges
The four suspects are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 18 August 2026. They face charges of extortion and money laundering, as well as contraventions of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).
Western Cape SAPS management commended the multi-agency effort that led to the arrests and confirmed that a project investigation established two years ago continues to gain momentum. Further arrests are anticipated as the investigation proceeds.
