Rassie Erasmus Reveals Springboks’ Peak Plan Ahead of Series-Deciding 4th Test vs All Blacks

Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has revealed that the heavy squad rotation South Africa employed throughout 2026 was always intended to leave his side with maximum energy for the series-deciding fourth Test against the All Blacks, scheduled for Saturday in Baltimore.

Speaking during a Monday teleconference, which followed the confirmation of Damian Willemse's return and Morné van den Berg's promotion into the starting line-up at scrumhalf, Erasmus drew on past World Cup and British and Irish Lions experience to explain the squad management philosophy.

"I'm not saying I'm correct, but we've found that games three and four are where the series gets won or lost. You could lose the first two, but then win three and four," Erasmus said.

"So we felt 'gas in the tank' was important, and that's why we managed the guys so much in the Nations Championship. We only have six games left [in 2026], so we've chopped and changed a lot."

He described the build-up to this point as a deliberate process, with continuity only expected to take shape from the second match onwards and peak performance targeted specifically at the back end of the series.

"Peaking, hopefully, at games three and four was always the plan … because it's not often that you get the opportunity to try and win a series against New Zealand," he added.

Lock Depth No Longer a Concern

Erasmus also reflected on a year in which South Africa's lock stocks were stretched at various points, with Riley Norton and Ben-Jason Dixon both required to fill in. He expressed confidence that the situation has since stabilised.

RG Snyman is expected back early next year, while Salmaan Moerat is set to remain active with a move to France. Erasmus highlighted Ruan Nortjé as a firmly established option and credited Dixon's versatility for adding further cover.

Beyond the tight forwards, Erasmus provided a broader assessment of where the squad stands. Cobus Reinach, at 35, has held up better than anticipated at scrumhalf. Faf de Klerk's form for the Cheetahs has not gone unnoticed. With Willemse capable of covering flyhalf, Erasmus identified three recognised options at that position. Quan Horn has emerged at fullback, and Embrose Papier has also been given an opportunity.

"I don't think there's an area where we're in trouble, we're doing OK," Erasmus said.
