For the first time in 'Married at First Sight Mzansi' history, a participant was given the green light to exit the experiment mid-season. Obren Motswane made that call in Season 3, and his departure has left viewers with more questions than answers about what went wrong between him and on-screen wife Laurinda Mabunda.
Laurinda, 32, chose to stay in the experiment and continue the season without him. Obren told the show's experts:
"The decision I've taken now is part and parcel of my healing journey. I really need to focus on that. From a spiritual point of view, I need to come right and pray that one day we find each other again. So, with that said, I'm leaving."
From the altar to LinkedIn
The couple started the experiment on solid footing. Obren, a father and creative entrepreneur, was matched with Laurinda, an economist and researcher who said she was seeking emotional safety and stability in a partner. Chemistry came naturally at first, but friction followed, with snoring complaints, communication issues, and what Obren described as a growing lack of respect in the marriage.

Rather than focus on the mechanics of the breakup, however, viewers took a sharp detour. Screenshots of Laurinda's LinkedIn profile began circulating, showing a CV that spans economics, demography, research, policy analysis, and data analysis, with professional ties to the South African Reserve Bank.
Obren opens up
Obren did not leave it entirely to fans to fill in the gaps. In a TikTok video posted to his own profile, he addressed his behaviour during the experiment, particularly a moment where he was accused of ‘blanket shoving’. He said:
"So, I cringed. When I was accused of blanket shoving, my overreaction, I cringed. And for me, I'm a work in progress.”
He also revealed he has been working with a counsellor and therapist to understand how his emotional reactions can come across as aggressive. He added:
"Not every action deserves a reaction. Even if you do have some form of reaction, stay calm… It's embarrassing, I cringe, and I'm not proud of it."
Despite walking out, Obren described the show as "the best experience of my life," saying it gave him the rare chance to see himself ‘from the outside looking in.’ He was clear that he has no regrets about participating, framing the exit as part of a broader personal growth process rather than a failure.

The clip showed Esethu confronting Prince about abandoning their marital home the previous day, with tensions quickly escalating.
