The Black Management Forum (BMF) has called for the immediate suspension of Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter. De Ruyter has been accused of being racist for allegedly replacing black suppliers with white suppliers.
The BMF want the power utility's head to leave with immediate effect as investigations into the allegations of racism are taking place. The BMF, in a media statement, says it is shocked that De Ruyter is able to continue with normal operations.
The situation, according to the BMF, contravenes many labour laws and governance principles. The BMF added that during De Ruyter's time at Nampak, De Ruyter solely appointed white males to executive positions.
The statement continued by saying that the suspension of De Ruyter is needed so that the embattled power utility does not become 'another farce':
"The suspension is justified in the interest of a fair process that is not intimidating to witnesses.
The BMF will be writing a letter to the Chairman of the Eskom Board as well as the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, where we will detail the specific instances that convince us that De Ruyter is not suitable for the job as CEO of Eskom; both on competence as well as on his outlook on issues of transformation."
Previously, Briefly.co.za reported that Eskom said they would be launching a probe into De Ruyter. Through a statement, Eskom revealed that the board would be appointing an independent senior counsel to conduct the investigation into De Ruyter.
De Ruyter has been accused of trying to get rid of black suppliers to introduce white suppliers. Suspended Eskom Chief Procurement Officer Solly Tshitangano had made an array of allegations against him.
De Ruyter also said he will cooperate fully with the investigations into his alleged racism. De Ruyter spoke on Monday, 15 March about the state of the embattled power utility. The CEO added that he will not tolerate corruption.
De Ruyter stated that the probe into the allegations of racism is welcome as both sexism and racism have 'no place' at Eskom. De Ruyter also stated that there are many people who could attest to the fact that he is not racist.
