Celebrated musician Ed Sheeran disclosed that he has an R104 million private chapel in his garden where his cemetery is already prepared and waiting for him.
In an interview with GQ Hyp, the singer clarified that it's more of a chapel with a hole dug in the ground and covered with stone.
"I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt," the 32-year-old told the outlet.
He added:
"It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there."
Why did Ed Sheeran dig his own grave?
He explained that he wants his daughters, Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter, to have a place to visit him after he passes away.
"People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without willsand no one knows what to do," he added.
The singer, who has won four Grammy Awards, decided to construct this chapel after facing challenging moments in his life, including his wife Cherry Seaborn's tumour diagnosis and the tragic death of his best friend, Jamal Edwards.
Additionally, Sheeran uses the chapel to mourn the loss of loved ones, including his grandmother, for whose recent funeral he was unable to be present due to a copyright trial in New York City.
Despite its association with sadness and loss, the chapel has also witnessed happier moments as Sheeran has hosted weddings for his friends there.
Why did Ed Sheeran award himself pay rise?
A few days ago, Sheeran's music empire flourished with a staggering R2 billion turnover since 2019.
According to The Mirror, the 32-year-old artist granted himself a R232 million pay raise, thanks to the continuous growth of his music career.
In 2022 alone, Sheeran's earnings reached R425 million, reflecting a notable increase of R206 million compared to the previous year.
