Veteran South African Afro-pop singer Nhlanhla Mafu has briefly traded the mic for the decks. The star has now introduced herself as a DJ!

Known mostly for her work in the legendary group Mafikizolo, Nhlanhla Mafu has found a new passion in the music industry. According to Sunday World, the singer mostly plays Afrotech, 3Step and Afrohouse during her sets.

Mafu got to know of her ability to DJ through a friend named Kgomotso 'DJ So' Zukani. She told the news publication that she had attended one of his gigs as a friend to support him. He then invited her to play towards the end of his set and blew everyone away. From there, she has since honed her skills, but it took her just three days to learn how to play.

Mafu then landed her very first gig as a DJ when the organisers at the venue booked her for a Women's Day event.

Mafu was booked at Laparada on Women's Day, and at the time, she promised her fans an experience like no other.

"Can’t wait to celebrate Women’s Day with y'all this Saturday at @laparadanorthriding It’s gonna be such a special one for 1 night only. Come experience me like you’ve never before. It's gonna be so fun."

“I enjoyed myself because I was engaging in an activity I found pleasurable, free from any form of stress or pressure,” she was quoted saying. “DJ So taught me everything I know,” Mafu added.

Since that gig, Mafu said she has been playing for friends and family at their private gatherings. Now that she has mastered her transitions, Mafu said it is time she shared her passion with Mzansi.

What's next for Mafikizolo?

Although she has taken up gigs, Mafu said her career as a DJ is purely for fun. However, she revealed that her first passion lies with Mafikizolo.

She prefers playing for the band rather than getting booked every weekend, further proving her loyalty to her other bandmate, Theo Kgosinkwe.

Nhlanhla previously took a break from Mafikizolo in 2024 to focus on her solo music career.

"I’m so proud of this remix. Tems and Omah Lay take it to the next level. The first thing I wanted to do was share it with both of my parents. Proof that good music brings people together. I can only go back to the days you guys told me I’ll be making the world dance one day . I love you guys! @tknciza_sa @nhlanhla_mafu."
