Actor and activist Siv Ngesi has found himself in the middle of a raging online debate after weighing in on a video showing demonstrators surrounding and appearing to confront beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina outside the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026.

The footage, which spread rapidly across X, was filmed on a city street lined with historic red-brick buildings, with security personnel, media cameras, and a crowd of demonstrators visible. Some protesters wore South African flag colours, and at least one person carried a sign reading "South Africa is not a refugee site for African Countries." The atmosphere was visibly charged, with pushing, crowding, and a tense standoff between those present.

On 20 August 2026, Ngesi, who has been vocal about illegal immigration, responded directly to the post, making clear that while he supports the removal of undocumented immigrants, he refuses to back intimidation tactics.

"I am pro illegal people leaving SA! But we cannot normalise violence and embarrassing another human!" he wrote.

The comment immediately split opinions online, with many South Africans feeling that Ngesi was out of touch with the realities on the ground. See the post that sparked the debate below:

The replies came thick and fast. Here are some of the comments:

@LadyMpopi pushed back on Ngesi's position:

"We don't have 'buts' in our intolerance of illegal immigration. She chose to commit a crime by entering SA illegally and staying while prohibited. She's the wrong one."

South Africans outraged as Chidimma Adetshina's case gets postponed

@winstonterrance was equally blunt:

"Then you only 'pro' on Twitter, not on the ground because on the field this is the language we speak."

@HoopTakes2 directed frustration squarely at Ngesi:

"Sho Siv. It's for you ones to comment on how the work is being done. Leave it to them to get the work done since you lot are more suited to yapping your important intellectual mouths about how the work you should be doing is being done. Leave it to them."

@NtombikayiseBa6 broadened the argument:

"Can foreigners normalise not taking advantage of our kindness and actually respect our laws? Maybe we will be nice🤷‍♀️"

@ChazIssat targeted Chidimma directly:

"This woman has a very bad heart. Shows no remorse for 'what her mother did'. Instead, she wants to be parading for the spotlight. Broke another law by entering SA illegally when she was banned. She feels so special she made Nigeria rig a pageant competition. She is just vile (Evil)."
