Enhle Mbali Reacts as Killers of Pregnant Cop Sabeliwe Mogashoa Get Life Sentences

Actress Enhle Mbali took to Instagram on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, to share her reaction to the life imprisonment sentences handed to the killers of pregnant police officer Sabeliwe Mogashoa and her husband, Lucky. The star shared a News24 video clip headlined "5-year-old's plea for justice before parents' killers jailed for life," accompanying it with a heartfelt prayer.

"God, this state can only be fixed by you!!! We are not worthy, and we need you to help fix our hearts. In Jesus ' name... Amen!!!" she wrote in her caption.

Enhle Mbali's post arrived at a time of heightened public anxiety over violent crime, particularly against women, following a series of deaths reported in Ekurhuleni since July 2026.

The sentences behind the reaction

Convicted serial killer Rassie Hlabirwa Nkuna, 37, from Mpumalanga, and former police official Jacob Mothibe Chego, 41, who was previously employed at the White River Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, appeared before the Pretoria High Court on 2 September 2026. Both men were each sentenced to two life terms for two counts of premeditated murder and two further life terms for conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the March 2022 deaths of Lucky Mogashoa and his pregnant wife, Sabeliwe.

Beyond the murder charges, both men received five-year sentences each for four counts of kidnapping, as well as five-year terms for fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Nkuna received an additional 15 years each for two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The court ordered all sentences to run concurrently with the life terms and declared both men unfit to possess a firearm.

Appeal bid rejected

Following sentencing, Chego's legal representative brought an application for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence, as well as a bail application while his petition to the Supreme Court of Appeal was pending. The National Prosecuting Authority successfully opposed both applications, meaning Chego remains in custody.

The couple were killed in front of their young children, and it was the five-year-old's emotional plea for justice that gripped the nation and drew widespread attention to the case ahead of the sentencing.

Tyla criticised for staying silent on Ekurhuleni killings

Meanwhile, Briefly News previously reported that Tyla grew up in Kempton Park on the East Rand, close to where some of the bodies were found, prompting online scrutiny of her silence.
