Mapaseka Koetle is finding that her role on Mzansi Magic's Nyala O hits closer to home than she expected. The actress, who plays Kea Maponya, says the character's turbulent journey through betrayal and marriage has unlocked something deeply personal in her. She said, adding a touch of humour to what is clearly a meaningful admission:
"I am healing from this storyline because I am also a return soldier."
Kea's world mirrors real life
On Nyala O, Kea recently uncovered that her husband, Rhami Maponya, had been secretly raising a family in Tembisa, including a son who is older than the daughter she and Rhami share. Rhami also fathered two children with his mistress. The revelation has left Kea dealing with humiliation, embarrassment and the collapse of a marriage she had long presented as ideal, even authoring a book titled His Rib in celebration of it.

Mapaseka told Kaya 959 that many viewers are frustrated that Kea has not simply packed her bags and left. But she argues the situation is far more layered than it appears on screen. She added:
"People would have preferred Kea to leave her marriage, but most of them are staying in unhappy marriages. The cheating might not actually be Kea's dealbreaker."
She believes Kea's real battle is not just with her husband's infidelity but with the crushing weight of admitting that the life she championed publicly was built on something fragile.
"She is always advocating for marriage, and she has centred her whole life on Rhami and her marriage. Yes, she is angry, but more than anything, she's disappointed that her marriage is not what she portrayed it to be."
The mother-in-law lesson
One of the storyline's sharper realities involves BoMMa, Rhami's mother, played by Elizabeth Serunye, who knew about the secret family all along and said nothing. Mapaseka says this serves as a sobering reminder for women everywhere: your mother-in-law is not your mother. No matter how warm that relationship may feel, a parent's loyalty will ultimately return to their own child.
Beyond the betrayal narrative, Mapaseka says the role has pushed her to reflect on how women divide their attention between careers, relationships and family life. She added:
"I am also learning that women need to start paying attention. There's nothing wrong with being a career woman; it is, in fact, great, but we need to prioritise our families.”
She also noted that acting has deepened her empathy. Despite the heavy themes Kea carries in each episode, Mapaseka says the outpouring of support from viewers has been overwhelming and continues to fuel her through the role.
