A powerful legacy in South African theatre
The couple's bond went far deeper than marriage. Renaye and David Kramer's connection stretched back to their childhoods in Worcester in the Western Cape, long before he became one of South Africa's most recognisable performers. Over the decades, Renaye remained closely tied to his creative world, contributing to productions linked to the Kramer-Petersen Songbook and the musical Ver in die Wêreld Kittie.
Beyond her marriage to David, Renaye was an industry powerhouse in her own right, recognised as one of South Africa’s most successful and influential theatre producers. According to an official press release issued by the family, she passed away in Cape Town at the age of 74. Over a career spanning more than four decades, her work behind the scenes was instrumental in shaping the country’s musical theatre landscape and bringing local stories to stages around the world.
Her impact on the industry was monumental. In the 1980s, she co-produced the original District Six: The Musical with the Baxter Theatre, reaching over 350,000 people before touring internationally. In 1995, she produced the original stage production of Kat and the Kings. Following its local acclaim, the show travelled to London’s West End - where it won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 1999 - before opening on Broadway later that year.
In addition to managing the iconic Dock Road Theatre complex for six years in the 1990s, Renaye later served as a key consultant for the Fugard Theatre, overseeing productions such as District Six Kanalla and Orpheus in Africa. She remained deeply dedicated to the arts until her passing, actively co-producing From Hanover Street with the Broetjie my Bra Collective, which is scheduled to return to the Artscape Theatre in November 2026.
Four decades of South African cultural legacy
David Kramer has built a career spanning more than 40 years in South African music and theatre, celebrated for his Afrikaans songs, stage productions, and his trademark red veldskoen shoes. He is also widely remembered for his iconic Volkswagen Microbus adverts.
His most enduring creative partnership was with the late Taliep Petersen, with whom he crafted landmark productions including District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings. Those works brought the stories of Cape Town's communities, culture, and history to audiences both locally and abroad.
In January 2026, two decades after Petersen's murder, the City of Cape Town honoured both men with the Freedom of the City for their lasting contribution to Cape Town's cultural heritage. Kramer received the award in person at Cape Town City Hall, while Petersen's family accepted the posthumous recognition on his behalf.
Renaye's passing comes only months after that milestone moment of recognition for her husband.
