"Peace and Privacy": CoolStoryBru Shares Take on Durban Man Living in Tree Shack in Video

  • A Durban man built a makeshift shack high up in a tree opposite his own home, not out of necessity but by choice
  • His family warned him the structure was dangerous, but the man refused to stop climbing up there
  • Reaction video by CoolStoryBru sparked a wave of relatable responses from South Africans online

A Durban man has gone viral after building a shack in a tree directly opposite his house, not because he had nowhere to live, but simply because he wanted somewhere quiet to be alone. The story was picked up by commentary creator CoolStoryBru in a Facebook video posted on 6 July 2026, where he reacted with visible amusement. "South Africans are just built different," he said, walking viewers through outdoor footage of the elevated structure marked with an on-screen "A" label and wooden planks wedged between the branches.

According to the creator, who cited The Daily Sun as his source, the man's family has repeatedly asked him to come down, warning him that the height makes it genuinely risky. He has ignored every appeal. They also said he spends the majority of his day up there and refuses to speak to anyone while he is in his tree retreat. Watch the video below:
