@anitahaul posted a breakdown applying the popular 50/30/20 budgeting rule to a R15,000 monthly salary. Under this method, 50% goes to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings or debt repayment.

On paper, the numbers look clean. In practice, many South Africans said the post was anything but.

R7,500 for rent, groceries and more

@anitahaul allocated R7,500 to essential needs, covering rent, groceries, transport, bills and insurance. A further R4,500 was set aside for wants, including eating out, beauty, clothes, entertainment and gym. The remaining portion was allocated for savings.

For anyone living in a major South African city, especially Cape Town, those figures raised immediate red flags. Rent alone in most parts of Cape Town far exceeds R7,500 for even a modest one-bedroom flat, leaving little to nothing for everything else on that list.

The post was meant to simplify personal finance, but it ended up doing the opposite, opening a very raw conversation about the cost of living for working South Africans.
