A man was spotted sitting at the very top of a high-voltage electricity transmission tower, leaving onlookers bewildered and deeply concerned.
Photos shared on 17 August 2026 by Facebook user Thokozile Happiness Zondo showed a figure perched high up on the steel lattice structure, completely motionless.
The post drew immediate attention from South Africans who could not make sense of what they were seeing.
Why the tower is so dangerous
Transmission towers are tall steel structures, typically standing between 15 and 50 meters high, used to carry high-voltage power lines across long distances. They are not built for public access. Only trained and certified utility workers with specialised safety equipment are permitted to climb them legally.

The risks for anyone else are severe. High-voltage electricity can arc to a person even without direct physical contact with the cables, and a fall from that height would almost certainly be fatal. Climbing such a structure without authorisation is also a criminal offence, carrying charges of trespassing or vandalism.
Whether the man climbed willingly or how he reached the top remained unclear. Authorities and emergency services had not publicly confirmed his condition at the time the post circulated.
