A disturbing scene along one of Cape Town's most popular stretches of coastline left South Africans deeply unsettled. TikToker @777nitro captured footage at Bloubergstrand on 17 August 2026 showing thousands of dead fish covering the shoreline. A dead seal and sea birds were also found among the fish, and several other birds in the area appeared visibly sick.
The person behind the camera raised the possibility that something toxic in the water was responsible, given how widespread the die-off appeared to be.
Dead animals raise alarm at Bloubergstrand
The video painted a grim picture. Fish carpeted the sand as far as the camera could see, and the presence of the seal and sea birds pointed to a chain reaction of deaths that started in the water. One viewer offered a different explanation, suggesting the fish may have carried a herpes virus identified in environmental studies on sardines. The person filming, however, pointed to something potentially more sinister after making another discovery at the scene.

The cause of the mass die-off had not been officially confirmed at the time the video went viral. No formal statement from environmental authorities or the City of Cape Town had been issued in response to the footage. The footage sparked immediate outrage and concern in the comments section, with many pointing fingers at sewage pollution:
