GAUTENG — Seven employees from the Emfuleni Local Municipality have been arrested in Vanderbijlpark following a targeted crackdown on an alleged electricity reconnection scheme that caused significant financial damage to the municipality.

The arrests were carried out by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Five suspects were taken into custody during a sting operation on Friday, with two further individuals apprehended on the morning of Sunday, 23 August 2026. All seven face charges of fraud, theft, and tampering with essential infrastructure.

How the alleged scheme operated

The suspects, drawn from Emfuleni's Revenue and Electricity Departments, allegedly approached residents whose power had been disconnected due to outstanding arrears. Posing as authorised municipal officials, they offered to restore electricity in exchange for cash payments made directly into their personal bank accounts, bypassing the municipality's official payment systems entirely.

The unauthorised reconnections enabled continued electricity theft by effectively circumventing municipal meters. The Emfuleni Local Municipality, which has long faced serious financial strain, sustained further losses as a result of the scheme.

Arrests and court date

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the investigation remains active and that additional arrests are expected as authorities continue to probe internal fraud within the municipality.

All seven suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.
