SASSA Black Card Deadline: What Beneficiaries Need To Know Before 31 August

• Nearly 80,000 SASSA grant beneficiaries still need to migrate from gold cards to black cards before the 31 August 2026 deadline
• Postbank confirmed the deadline will not be extended, warning that those who miss it risk having their grant payments interrupted

Time is running out for tens of thousands of South Africans who rely on social grants. Postbank has issued a final appeal to nearly 80,000 SASSA beneficiaries who have not yet switched from gold cards to black cards ahead of the 31 August 2026 deadline.

The bank made clear that no extension would be granted, urging all remaining beneficiaries to visit a card replacement site as soon as possible to avoid disruptions to their monthly payments.

Who still needs to switch?

The current migration phase launched in April 2026 and initially targeted around 420,000 beneficiaries. More than 1.8 million people have completed the switch since the broader process began in 2025, but a significant number remain outstanding with days to go.

KwaZulu-Natal carries the largest backlog, with roughly 20,000 beneficiaries yet to make the change. The Western Cape follows with 17,000, the Eastern Cape with 15,000 and Gauteng with 14,000.

What Postbank is doing to help

Postbank chief commercial officer Thami Cele stressed that protecting beneficiaries from payment disruptions was the bank's main priority. He added:

"We understand that grant payments are an important source of livelihood for many families, and we want to ensure that no one is unnecessarily inconvenienced; hence we are making this final special appeal to all remaining beneficiaries to complete their migration within the less than five-day period that is left."

To manage the expected surge in the final days, at card replacement sites across the country to handle increased foot traffic.

Beneficiaries who have not yet migrated should go to their nearest Postbank card replacement site, where staff will assist them through the process.

How to get your Postbank Black Card

Need to swap your Gold Card? You can get a Postbank Black Card at selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores. Card replacement sites are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Dial *120*355# on your phone to find your nearest site.

The swap is free, but you’ll need a valid South African ID or temporary ID. Postbank also says beneficiaries should visit a Postbank service point, rather than SASSA offices, for Gold Card or Black Card queries.
