A Limpopo science teacher has earned one of the country's most prestigious education honours. Abiud Prosper Baloyi, who teaches at Mugwazeni Secondary School, won in the Physical Sciences category at the 26th National Teaching Awards on 2 October 2026.

The Department of Basic Education hosted the ceremony at the Birchwood Hotel in Gauteng, under the theme "Uniting for Excellence: Elevating Achievement, Empowering Educators to Shape South Africa's Future." President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the gathering, using the occasion to highlight the vital role that dedicated teachers play in shaping the country's future.

Baloyi's recognition came off the back of a remarkable shift at Mugwazeni Secondary School. Under his guidance, Physical Sciences pass rates climbed significantly, and a genuine culture of STEM learning began to take root among learners. What stood out even further was his long-term impact: several former matriculants from his school went on to pursue Bachelor of Education degrees, returning to classrooms as science teachers themselves.

His influence has not been confined to the classroom. Baloyi plays an active role in the Mugwazeni Development Committee, a community structure through which he has worked to uplift the broader area, not just the school.

A teacher who goes beyond the curriculum

The judges recognised Baloyi for his leadership, innovation and commitment to academic excellence. His story reflects what is possible when a teacher invests not only in learners' grades but in their futures and their communities. The Department of Basic Education organised the National Teaching Awards to celebrate educators who go above and beyond in South African schools each year.
