Thembi Ubisi, the domestic worker and TikTok personality known for her playful bond with employer Malcolm Wentzel, left South Africans in stitches after a throwback clip showed her completely outsmarting him in a cash challenge at his Johannesburg home.

Malcolm placed a glass bottle upside down on top of a banknote and told Thembi she could keep R1,000 if she managed to slide the note out from underneath without touching the bottle. Simple enough on paper, but Malcolm clearly expected it to be impossible.

Thembi studied the setup carefully. Rather than attempting the trick herself, she quietly called another person into the room and, without using English, asked him to lift the bottle. He did exactly that. With the bottle no longer in the way, Thembi calmly picked up the note along with the R1,000 prize sitting beside it.

Malcolm's R1,000 bet backfires spectacularly

Malcolm immediately challenged her, insisting she had broken the rules. Thembi's defence was airtight. She had not touched the bottle. Someone else lifted it. She simply took what was hers. As far as she was concerned, she had won fair and square.

Malcolm disagreed loudly and chased after her as she walked away laughing, declaring herself the smarter of the two. The clip ends with the pair in full comedic pursuit around the living area, as is typical of their well-loved dynamic.

The video was reshared by TikTok user @edgar.reginald.b5z.1 and quickly gained traction online.

Malcolm and Thembi first rose to fame during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown, when their funny clips showing daily life together went viral. Over the years, Malcolm gifted Thembi her first car, a Rolex watch, and helped build her a house, all documented online. Their relationship has sparked both admiration and debate about employer-employee boundaries in South Africa.
