An American mother living in Cape Town left thousands of people emotional after she posted a TikTok video on 23 July 2026 reflecting on how much her family's life had changed since relocating to South Africa.
@iamkourtneyjade filmed the video during her son King's third birthday party, which took place in a public space with children gathered around a decorated table, party packs laid out, and cake being sliced. Fighting back tears in her voiceover, she described the moment as one she never thought possible.
King had 30 children attend his celebration. The party ran over its scheduled time by a full hour because so many guests arrived, including some who came late, and the family wanted everyone to enjoy the occasion fully.
From Las Vegas to Cape Town
Kourtney said the turnout meant more to her than most people would understand. Back in Las Vegas, her children rarely had large groups of friends show up for their birthdays. She did not come from a big family, and big celebrations simply were not part of their lives.

Since moving to South Africa, that has changed completely. She said parents who brought their children to the party did not just drop them off. They stayed, helped cut and serve the cake, handed out pieces to the kids, and cleaned up when it was over. Nobody was asked to do any of it.
South Africa's community culture is deeply rooted in the concept of Ubuntu, the idea that people are connected through their shared humanity and responsibility to one another. This spirit of showing up, often without a formal invitation, is a recognisable part of daily life here.
