GAUTENG — Political tension in the City of Tshwane has escalated after the African National Congress and Democratic Alliance demanded that Mayor Nasiphi Moya release personal financial records to prove that her home renovations were privately funded.

According to SABC News, both parties allege that service providers linked to the city carried out the work at Moya's private residence and are calling for invoices and payment receipts to establish whether any municipal resources were used in the process. DA spokesperson Dikeledi Selowa said the calls for transparency followed public statements Moya had already made in response to mounting queries from journalists and members of the public.

Selowa rejected suggestions that the demands amounted to a political witch-hunt, arguing that producing personal payment records would quickly resolve the matter and put questions about municipal involvement to rest.

Moya, who recently found a mortuary running next to a spaza shop in July, has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that her home renovations were carried out by private contractors who have no connection to the city, and that all costs were covered entirely from her own funds. She warned against launching a sweeping investigation into her personal finances based on what she described as unsubstantiated allegations.

ActionSA dismisses claims as politically motivated

ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont pushed back firmly against the calls for disclosure, characterising the pressure campaign as a politically calculated attempt to undermine Moya ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. Beaumont said documented evidence already exists confirming that the contractor used for the mayor's home improvements holds no affiliation or business relationship with the City of Tshwane.

Despite Moya's defence and ActionSA's position, the ANC and DA maintained that releasing bank transactions remains the clearest path to accountability, and that the mayor's verbal assurances are insufficient without supporting financial documentation.

In a related article, Briefly News reported on Moya's recent raid on a suspected brothel in Sunnyside, which resulted in the arrest of six foreign nationals and the establishment's owner. This operation is part of a larger initiative to dismantle an alleged syndicate of illegal brothels linked to Chinese nationals operating across the city.
