SOUTH AFRICA — Joe Sebanyoni, widely known as "Joe Ferrari," has resigned from all his leadership positions within South Africa's taxi industry, stepping down from multiple roles tied to his business interests in the sector.
The resignation follows his appearance before the Madlanga Commission on 28 August 2026, where Sebanyoni made significant allegations about the inner workings of the taxi industry, including claims that he survived two assassination attempts, in 2006 and again in August 2022. The specific reasons behind his decision to resign have not been publicly confirmed.
Madlanga Commission cross-examination ahead
Sebanyoni is scheduled to return to the Madlanga Commission on 21 September 2026, when he will face formal cross-examination. The questioning is expected to focus on allegations raised by suspended police officers and intelligence witnesses, particularly concerning police collusion and protection rackets linked to the taxi sector.

The Commission has continued to examine evidence relating to the so-called "Big Five" transport cartel, which allegedly coordinated illegal tolling, route blockades, and tender extortion across Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and Limpopo.
Delmas court case postponed to October
On 1 September 2026, Sebanyoni appeared alongside three co-accused at the Delmas Magistrate's Court: Mvimbi Daniel Masilela, Philemon Makhaya Msiza, and Bafana Oupa Sindane. The case was postponed to October 2026 after the defence team lodged applications to challenge existing bail conditions, which include travel restrictions and financial asset freezes, and requested the final indictment docket from the state.
The charges against Sebanyoni include extortion amounting to R2.2 million, involving mining entrepreneur Thomas Thengane Ntuli and the Moroto Road project. Each of the accused is currently held to bail of R70,000.
Sebanyoni's testimony and legal proceedings are drawing significant attention to the relationships between taxi associations, mining sector protection rackets, and alleged high-level police involvement in Mpumalanga and surrounding provinces.
