LIMPOPO — The Polokwane Magistrate's Court has refused bail to Pretoria attorney Charlotte Tibana and her husband, Tshwane Metro Police Department Constable Peter "Gagash" Nonyane, after the pair were arrested for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale estate fraud scheme.
The two face a combined 43 charges, including fraud, money laundering, and theft, linked to the alleged plundering of at least six deceased estates. According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethabo Mashishi, the investigation was triggered by a tip-off from McCarthy Mercedes-Benz Wonderboom in Pretoria.
The dealership contacted authorities after flagging irregularities surrounding the couple's purchase of a Mercedes-AMG G63 valued at R1.65 million. The Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team subsequently established that the funds used for the vehicle were allegedly drawn directly from estate accounts administered by Tibana's legal practice.
Tibana allegedly exploited her position as either executor or legal consultant for the relevant deceased estates, redirecting payouts owed to beneficiaries and grieving families into private accounts. Nonyane, a serving metro police officer, is alleged to have played a role in laundering those proceeds.

Bail refused due to investigation risk
During the bail hearing, the presiding magistrate determined that releasing the accused would pose a material risk to the ongoing investigation and to potential witnesses. Both Tibana and Nonyane were ordered to remain in custody while police continue to expand their inquiry into further estates that may have been targeted. The couple's next court appearance has not yet been confirmed publicly. Both accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
