Three children were inside a vehicle when former professional boxer Zolani Tete was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane, with the youngest passenger, an eight-year-old child, still seated in the car as gunmen allegedly opened fire at close range.

The details surfaced during bail proceedings at the Mdantsane magistrate's court, where the State is opposing release for two men accused of orchestrating the killing.

Alleged plot laid out in court

Prosecutors told the court the murder was not a spontaneous act, but a carefully coordinated operation, with the alleged shooters said to have been recruited through a middleman. Police have since recovered firearms and arrested two alleged hitmen, though the individual accused of driving the getaway vehicle remains at large.

The two accused, Uzozole Goqwana and Sinebongo Qase, face eight charges in total, including murder, premeditated murder, attempted murder, and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

State labels alleged mastermind a flight risk

Prosecutors have characterised Goqwana as dangerous and well-connected, arguing before the court that granting him bail poses a direct risk to the integrity of the investigation. The State contends he could use his connections to intimidate or interfere with witnesses if released.

Both Goqwana and Qase remain in custody while the court considers the bail application.
