Attorney Charlotte Tibana Denies 3 Suicide Attempts as Bail Hearing Continues in Polokwane

LIMPOPO — A Polokwane court heard on 25 August 2026 that attorney Charlotte Tibana allegedly attempted suicide three times, a claim she denies, as a bail hearing for her and her husband continues after they were arrested for money laundering.

According to Sunday World, Constable Phuthisho Thobejane took the stand during the proceedings at the Polokwane Magistrate's Court, where he testified that he is in possession of a voice recording in which Tibana admits to the three attempts. Tibana's legal team had questioned why the allegation had not been raised before cross-examination, to which Thobejane responded that he had never been directly asked to present the evidence prior to that point.

Witness interference claims surface in court

Thobejane also revealed that Tibana made contact with the families of state witnesses while detained in a jail cell. He produced a voice note and a screenshot as supporting evidence for the assertion.

The defence, meanwhile, challenged claims that Tibana's husband, Tshwane metro police officer Peter "Gagash" Nonyane, caused a disturbance at a Mercedes-Benz dealership during a R1.7-million transaction. Under cross-examination, Thobejane conceded that CCTV footage from the dealership did not show any commotion or the brandishing of a firearm.

State opposes bail over flight risk concerns

The court also examined Nonyane's monthly payments of R46,000 for a Mercedes-Benz V-Class as part of broader scrutiny into the couple's financial affairs. The investigating officer formally opposed bail for both accused, arguing they pose a risk of absconding and could continue interfering with state witnesses if released. Tibana and Nonyane face multiple counts of fraud and money laundering in connection with funds allegedly stolen from deceased estates.
