Fikile Mbalula Accuses Floyd Shivambu of “Snitching” to the IEC Over ANC’s Candidate Lists

GAUTENG - African National Congress Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has publicly accused Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu of snitching on the ANC.

Mbalula noted the letter Shivambu wrote to the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), demanding that it not bend back to accommodate political parties, old and new, that have failed to submit the Candidates’ Lists by the closing day and time.

Mbalula made the remarks at a press briefing at Luthuli House on 8 September 2026, addressing the controversy surrounding the ANC's failure to complete the formal submission step for some candidate lists on time.

Mbalula targets Shivambu and Afrika Mayibuye

Speaking about Shivambu's letter to the IEC on 1 September 2026, Mbalula appeared visibly agitated, saying that the letter amounted to interference.

"I saw Floyd Shivambu's letter, which was snitching on us to the IEC that we must be dealt with," he said. "That is snitching. It's bad for a new political party like Floyd."

ANC blames technical glitches for issue

Parties had until 5 pm on 28 August 2026 to finalise nominations through the IEC's online system. The ANC acknowledged that candidate details had been captured but that the final "submit" step was not completed on some lists, attributing the problem to technical difficulties on the platform.

The IEC, however, denied any system failure, stating that the online portal had remained fully operational throughout the submission window and had been available to parties weeks before the deadline.

Mbalula asks church to pray for ANC

Briefly News reported that Mbalula addressed members of St John's Apostolic Church in Katlehong, asking them for their votes.

The African National Congress Secretary-General also asked the church to forgive party members for their transgressions.

South Africans weighed in on Mbalula's comments, with many criticising the former Police Minister for his appeal.
