SOUTH AFRICA — The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has filed a criminal case against Mark Burke, the former Federal Finance Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance, over alleged financial misconduct linked to a firm called Kastelo.

According to eNCA, MK Party Member of Parliament Andile Mngxitama formally opened the case, which centres on alleged breaches of South Africa's exchange-control and capital regulations. Burke is reported to be a beneficiary of Kastelo, a financial services company at the heart of the allegations. Burke no longer serves on Parliament's Finance Committee or within the Finance Cluster. His removal from those positions coincides with an ongoing investigation by the South African Reserve Bank into the matter.

MK Party calls for DA accountability

MK Party member Sifiso Mahlangu used the development to challenge the DA's standing as a champion of accountability. Mahlangu argued that the opposition party could not credibly preach accountability to others while one of its senior figures faced allegations of this nature. He further called on the DA to clarify whether the principles it advocates apply equally to its own leadership. The DA has not publicly responded to the criminal case at the time of publication.
