Fatal Showdown: Tweeling Suspect Accused of Killing Ex-Girlfriend Dies in Gunfight With SAPS

FREE STATE — A 36-year-old woman was fatally shot by her former partner in Tweeling on 18 August 2026, triggering a police pursuit that ended in the suspect's death after he opened fire on officers.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tweeling confirmed that a murder case has been opened following the domestic violence-related incident. An inquest docket was separately registered to investigate the circumstances of the suspect's death, which will be examined by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in accordance with the law.

The victim had finished her shift at a workplace in Reitz at approximately 17:45 and was making her way towards Tweeling. She boarded a white motor vehicle without knowing that the 40-year-old suspect was already inside, reportedly having planned the attack in advance. When the vehicle reached 10th Street in Tweeling, the woman stepped out. The suspect followed, allegedly seized her, and shot her in the head before fleeing towards Reitz.

Members of the public immediately contacted police and relayed information about the suspect's whereabouts. Two units responded: the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and Tweeling Visible Policing.

Suspect opens fire, fatally wounded

Officers from the FCS Unit, travelling in a Mahindra vehicle and dressed in civilian clothing, spotted the suspect hitchhiking along the road. He approached the vehicle, apparently believing the occupants were offering a lift. As he engaged with them, he noticed a second police vehicle carrying uniformed officers pulling up behind the Mahindra.

The suspect drew a firearm and fired at the uniformed officers, seemingly unaware that the Mahindra's occupants were also police. The FCS members responded immediately, and the suspect was fatally wounded in the exchange.

Provincial Commissioner condemns attack

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia condemned the killing and credited members of the public for the swift resolution. Sh ealso offered some words of adice saying,

"We urge members of the community, particularly victims of domestic violence, not to remain silent when they are subjected to threats, intimidation or abuse. Early reporting can enable the police and other relevant support structures to intervene before such situations escalate into loss of life," Lesia said.
