WESTERN CAPE — A 37-year-old mother facing four counts of rape against her own children appeared for the second time before the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on 8 September 2026, prompting urgent calls from local advocacy groups and political leaders for both judicial protection and community support for the two young victims.

IOL reported that the accused, whose identity is protected by law to preserve the anonymity of her eight-year-old son and ten-year-old daughter, was arrested last week. The state alleges she sexually assaulted each child on two separate occasions. The matter was remanded to 14 September 2026 for a formal bail application.

Advocacy group demands in-camera proceedings

Janine Passenz of the Survivors Haven Foundation appealed to the court to conduct all future hearings behind closed doors, citing the need to shield the children from further trauma. She also issued a public warning against community members circulating details of the case on social media, emphasising that doing so could cause additional harm to the victims.

Atlantis ward councillor Allister Lightburn described the allegations as a fundamental betrayal of a caregiver's responsibility. He called for the full weight of the law to be applied and stressed that both the local support structures and social development departments must be activated without delay to provide assistance to the affected minors.

Community figures urge immediate intervention

Both Passenz and Lightburn agreed that the institutional response must extend beyond the courtroom. They pointed to social development resources as a critical lifeline for children in situations involving abuse by a primary caregiver, where the usual home environment can no longer offer safety.

The accused cannot be named under South African law, as doing so would risk identifying the child victims. The case returns to the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on 14 September 2026.
