GAUTENG - A 45-year-old man is facing drug-related charges after being apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport, but his arrest has sparked a debate online.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the man was arrested on Monday, 7 September 2026, with roughly two kilograms of cocaine. The cocaine was estimated to be worth more than R800 000 on the street.
Police stated that officers acted on intelligence-driven information before intercepting the suspect. At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly in the process of boarding a flight bound for Hong Kong, China.

Second bust at OR Tambo in less than a week
A search of the suspect's luggage yielded the cocaine, and he is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court this week to face charges related to drug trafficking.
The arrest comes just four days after a separate operation at the same airport on 3 September 2026, during which a 54-year-old man was taken into custody. That suspect was also allegedly travelling to Hong Kong, China, and cocaine was found concealed in his baggage.
SAPS said the two successive arrests at OR Tambo demonstrate continued efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks through intelligence-driven operations at the country's ports of entry.
Public reaction mixed on policing approach
The announcement drew a range of responses on social media. Some users questioned whether suspects should be arrested locally or allowed to travel and then flagged to authorities at their destination.
