Woman Shot Dead by Boyfriend in Bohlokong, Man Hospitalised After Street Shooting

FREE STATE — A 22-year-old woman has died after she was allegedly shot by her boyfriend at their home in Bohlokong on Sunday, 16 August 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 16:00 when the couple became embroiled in an argument at their residence.

According to the South African Police Service, the boyfriend allegedly opened fire on his girlfriend, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He then left the residence and entered the street, where he was wounded in a separate shooting incident. Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital, where he received medical treatment. The incident happened after a woman was strangled to death in front of her son in KwaZulu-Natal a week ago.

Investigators have seized the firearm used in the killing for forensic analysis. A murder case is currently under investigation, though authorities have not yet determined what prompted the argument or the subsequent violence.

Second Femicide incident near Senekal

A separate but similar tragedy unfolded a week earlier, on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at approximately 23:15 in Matwabeng, near Senekal. A man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the firearm on himself at their shared residence. Both were declared dead at the scene. The weapon was confiscated and will form part of ongoing investigations into cases of murder and inquest.

SAPS urges public to report abusive relationships

The South African Police Service expressed grave concern over the frequency of gender-based violence and partner violence incidents occurring in communities across the country. The police called on members of the public, particularly young people, to seek help when relationships turn abusive or when conflict begins to intensify.

SAPS further urged victims and witnesses of abuse to come forward and report incidents of violence to police or relevant government departments and support organisations. According to the police, early intervention remains one of the most effective tools in preventing situations from escalating into fatal violence.
