KWAZULU-NATAL - A grieving Ladysmith mother has made a desperate plea for financial help to give her son a dignified burial after he was shot dead during a violent confrontation involving foreign nationals.
Banele Manyoni was shot dead following a confrontation between community members and foreign nationals in the Tsakane area of Steadville, Ladysmith, on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
According to police, a man suspected of firing the fatal shot was taken in for questioning but was subsequently released.

Banele's mother appeals for assistance
Speaking about the tragedy, his mother, Phumuzile Manyoni, asked South Africans to assist in covering funeral costs.
"We wish to bury him this Saturday, but our resources are very limited, and we don't see how we will manage," she said in a video.
Phumzile stated that no one worked at home, and that they survived on child grants and the R350 grant
The murder sparked outrage in the country, and led to many calling on the government to do more about the immigration crisis in the country. The death also prompted March and March to hold a demonstration in the town on 3 September 2026, calling for justice for the 20-year-old.
