DURBAN — South African Police Service investigators have opened a reckless and negligent driving docket following a hit-and-run incident involving Bongani Dlomo, one of the accused in the high-profile R320 million eThekwini municipal tender corruption trial. The active investigation was confirmed during a brief resumption of Durban High Court proceedings on Wednesday.
According to Eyewitness News, Dlomo was on foot in the Bluff area on Saturday when a vehicle struck him and fled the scene. He was subsequently hospitalised with head trauma, a right shoulder injury, and extensive bruising across his body.
Trial halted after medical records submitted
Wednesday's court session was convened solely for defence attorneys to place official documentation before the court detailing Dlomo's medical condition. State prosecutors confirmed they had received both the SAPS accident report and Dlomo's private medical files.

The severity of his injuries made it impossible for the trial to proceed, resulting in a temporary adjournment while the State reviewed the submitted reports. Medical practitioners issued a formal letter indicating that Dlomo is anticipated to be fit to stand trial by 31 August, the date set for proceedings to resume at the Durban High Court.
Dlomo accused alongside former Mayor Gumede
Dlomo faces charges of fraud and corruption alongside former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede and 20 co-accused. The case centres on an allegedly irregular Durban Solid Waste tender valued at approximately R320 million. The matter has been working its way through the courts for several years and has involved numerous delays, with Wednesday's development adding a further interruption to the trial schedule.
No arrests have been made in connection with the hit-and-run incident, and the SAPS docket remains open as investigators pursue the matter.
