WESTERN CAPE - National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has survived a motion of no confidence.
The motion was brought against her by the Economic Freedom Fighters in Parliament. A total of 282 Members of Parliament voted against the motion, while 101 voted in favour of it.
The motion was heard during a lengthy virtual sitting on 26 August 2026.

Why the EFF targeted Didiza
The Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema initiated the motion in June 2026, citing what he described as Didiza's partisan conduct in her role as Speaker.
The EFF and Malema accused her of failing to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa's court application, which sought to halt the Section 89 impeachment committee established to investigate the Phala Phala farm scandal.
The EFF argued that her inaction amounted to a conflict of interest that undermined the constitutional independence of the Speaker's office.
Opposition parties ask Didiza to recuse herself
Briefly News previously reported that opposition parties wanted Thoko Didiza to recuse herself from matters related to the Section 89 Impeachment Committee.
African Transformation Movement (ATM) leader Vuyo Zungula announced the collective decision before the committee’s first sitting on 1 June 2026.
Zungula clarified that parties are not calling for Didiza’s removal as Speaker, but specifically for her recusal from this impeachment process.
