KWAZULU NATAL - A Durban chef is being celebrated as a hero after he risked his life to pull a woman out of a burning restaurant. The incident unfolded on Thursday, 3 September 2026, when a fire broke out at the Delphi Greek Taverna on Lilian Ngoyi Road in Durban.
The blaze spread rapidly, tearing through the restaurant and a neighbouring shop before consuming the roof entirely.
Chef soaks himself in water before entering blaze
Good Things Guy founder and editor-in-chief Brent Lindeque brought the story to public attention, describing the unidentified man's actions as nothing short of heroic. According to Lindeque, the chef stripped off his shirt, drenched himself in water and walked into the burning building to reach a woman who was trapped inside with her family in danger.

Once she was safely out, he slipped away from the scene without waiting for praise or recognition. He was later identified as a chef from the Windermere Road area of Durban.
His selfless act has since drawn widespread admiration, with many people commending him for placing himself in harm's way for a stranger.
eThekwini firefighters bring blaze under control in 20 minutes
The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that emergency teams arrived at the scene promptly after receiving the call. Three fire engines, a water carrier, a foam carrier and a command vehicle were dispatched to tackle the fire. Crews found the structure fully alight, with the blaze already eating through the roof. Four hose lines were deployed and four firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building to fight the fire from inside.
The municipality said the fire was brought under control within roughly 20 minutes.
Remarkably, no injuries were reported. Firefighters confirmed that no people remained inside the building once the fire was out. Emergency crews also managed to rescue two dogs and a parrot from the restaurant during the operation.
The eThekwini Municipality praised its personnel for their rapid and disciplined response to what was described as a major fire incident. The cause of the blaze had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
