DURBAN - A foreign national was arrested on Thursday, 3 September 2026, after throwing a stone that struck a police officer during a tense standoff outside the Department of Home Affairs offices on Che Guevara Road in Umbilo, Durban.
The incident unfolded when roughly 100 members of the March and March movement descended on the area, describing their action as a clean-up campaign targeting illegal immigrants. Congolese refugees who had been camping outside the offices for three months were at the centre of the confrontation.
Clean-up campaign turns violent
Tensions boiled over when marchers allegedly began collecting items belonging to the foreign nationals. The situation quickly turned physical. Police, who had deployed sufficient numbers to the scene ahead of the march, stepped in to restore order.

During the chaos, stones were thrown at officers, and one struck a police officer. Authorities used minimum proportional force to bring the crowd under control, and calm was eventually restored. The suspect was arrested on nearby More Road.
A case has been registered against the arrested individual, who is expected to appear in court once all formal processes have been completed.
KZN police probe continues
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that investigations into the public violence incident are ongoing. Authorities issued a firm warning to anyone who may have played a role in inciting the unrest, stating they would face the full force of the law.
The clash is the latest in a series of confrontations that have built steadily over three months at the Umbilo site. The March and March movement has indicated plans to continue weekly marches in the area, adding to ongoing debates around immigration enforcement and concerns over xenophobia in the province.

Previously, Briefly News reported that the movement's leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma confirmed that members had suffered injuries after clashes erupted between locals and Congolese nationals on Che Guevara Street.Over 100 migrants were stationed at a makeshift camp where they had sought refuge outside the Home Affairs offices after being displaced ahead of the 30 June nationwide protests against undocumented foreign nationals.
