SOUTH AFRICA — The legal team representing former Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence Major-General Feroz Khan has raised urgent concerns about his safety after his uncle-in-law, Preggy Padayachee, was shot and killed in Ekurhuleni on 5 October 2026. A passenger travelling with Padayachee sustained critical injuries in the attack, while a second passenger was unharmed.

According to eNCA, the killing took place just hours after Padayachee had reportedly warned Khan that his forthcoming testimony before the Madlanga Commission would "ruffle some feathers." Khan was scheduled to appear remotely before the commission on Tuesday morning, but those proceedings were postponed following the fatal incident.

Safety concerns halt Khan's testimony

Attorney Muhammed Vally, speaking to eNCA, outlined the gravity of the situation. He noted that because Padayachee was a close family relation, the threat to Khan's life cannot be dismissed. Vally confirmed that his team had formally engaged the Madlanga Commission to address the heightened security concerns before Khan delivers his evidence.

The commission accepted that both the emotional toll of the bereavement and the legitimate safety considerations warranted a delay to Khan's appearance. Vally added that the legal team would follow the commission's guidance on when to reschedule, subject to the resolution of those security arrangements.

Legal team awaits law enforcement findings

Co-counsel Kylen Ghirao stated that the defence is relying on law enforcement to identify and apprehend those responsible for Padayachee's killing before Khan proceeds with his testimony. No date has been confirmed for when Khan will next appear before the commission.
