eNCA investigations journalist Pule Letshwiti-Jones broke the story on X at 09:10, describing it as an "exclusive lead." He wrote that arrest warrants were authorised on Thursday, 29 October, in connection with a defeating the ends of justice case, and that further reporting from the eNCA Investigations team would follow. eNCA later reported that the pair are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, though no time was given.

By approximately 09:30 on Friday, the police, the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority and IDAC had not publicly commented on the reported arrests. The unit that carried out the arrests and the precise nature of the allegations remained unclear.

Who is Andrea Johnson?

Johnson is a senior prosecutor with roughly three decades of experience who previously served in the Scorpions. She took the helm of the Investigating Directorate in 2022, which later became IDAC.

At the Madlanga Commission in July 2026, retired Hawks Colonel Kobus Roelofse alleged that Johnson, while serving as an NPA prosecutor, arranged for a 2018 assault docket in which Khan was the suspect to be shared with him ahead of his warning statement. When Johnson testified on 21 July, she invoked her right against self-incrimination regarding the questions about Khan, noting that a docket relating to her was before the NPA pending a prosecution decision.

On 27 July 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted her resignation with immediate effect. In her departure letter, Johnson cited the reputational risk her continued leadership posed to both IDAC and the NPA. In October, National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi informed Parliament that she remained under criminal investigation. It has not been confirmed whether Friday's reported arrests are connected to the docket allegations.

Who is Feroz Khan?

Khan served as deputy head of SAPS Crime Intelligence until SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed on 2 September 2026 that he had been "deemed dismissed" after failing to participate in an expedited disciplinary process. His legal representatives indicated they would contest the dismissal.

In a separate matter, Khan was arrested on 10 May 2026 in connection with a 2021 gold seizure at OR Tambo International Airport. He faces charges that include corruption, defeating the ends of justice and contravening the Precious Metals Act, and is currently out on R20,000 bail.

Khan was shot and wounded in Houghton, Johannesburg, on 28 June, shortly before he was scheduled to appear before the Madlanga Commission. He failed to appear under subpoena on 28 September, prompting the commission to announce it would lay criminal charges against him. A planned in-camera testimony on 6 October was postponed following the killing of a family member in a shooting. Khan has denied wrongdoing in matters relating to the commission.
