More than ten days after the deaths of St Stithians teen couple Cameron Waldeck-Cooks and Ethan Coetzee, questions about their memorial and funeral arrangements remain unanswered, as investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder-suicide.
Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed this week that police would not be releasing any new information to the public while the investigation remains active.
What happened at the Waterval Lodge
Cameron, a Grade 11 learner at St Stithians College in Johannesburg, and Ethan Coetzee, a 2025 matriculant, were found dead on the morning of Monday, 3 August at the Waterval self-catering lodge in Mpumalanga. Their bodies were discovered by Ethan's father, Graham Coetzee. A statement released by Ethan's family indicated that the couple had appeared happy the evening before they were found.
Cameron had joined a multi-day hike, hoping the trip would contribute towards achieving the Gold level of The President's Award for Youth Empowerment.

Police initially treated the deaths as an inquest, with no foul play suspected. That changed after post-mortem results were returned. Preliminary findings, supported by an independent forensic pathologist, indicated that Cameron died as a result of strangulation or suffocation. Ethan's death is believed to be a suicide.
Authorities subsequently opened a murder case in connection with Cameron's death. No individual has been formally charged, and police have not publicly confirmed that Ethan was determined to be responsible.
Memorial service planned for August
Cameron's parents issued a public statement confirming that a memorial service will be held during August, though a specific date has not been announced. It remains unclear whether either Cameron or Ethan has been laid to rest through a private funeral.
Tributes have continued to pour in from various quarters. St Stithians College, The President's Award for Youth Empowerment, and anti-gender-based violence organisation Women For Change have all paid tribute to Cameron.
A group of cyclists competing in the Trans Baviaans Race dedicated their race to her memory. Cameron's father, Derrick Cooks, responded to the gesture, saying: "What you and the team did for Cam is incredibly special….knowing you carried her with you means everything. Cam would have absolutely loved this."
