A Gauteng family searching for their missing loved one received devastating news after a missing-persons organisation connected them with a hospital that had been trying to reach them for months.

Asimbongekuhle Sibanda, 25, was reported missing in Benoni, Gauteng. Missing Person South Africa shared her appeal on Facebook on 1 October 2026. Shortly after, Tambo Memorial Hospital reached out to the organisation, and the two parties helped connect the hospital with her family.

What the family learned shattered them. Asimbongekuhle had been admitted to Tambo Memorial Hospital on 24 April 2026, the very day she went missing. She died on 15 June 2026. By 18 September 2026, she had already been buried, while her family continued searching for her, believing she was still alive.

South Africans were deeply troubled by the case, raising concerns in the comments on the page.

Avril Cleenwerck said:

"I'm really confused.... When you're admitted to hospital you have to complete an admission form stating the name of the patient's next of kin and a contact number..... That's if the patient is admitted conscious. Normally 2 close relatives as next of kin in case the one can't be contacted."

Thabiso O T Titus asked:

"Buried with whose permission? Aren't they supposed to keep the body and issue notices in the paper?"

"What I know is that if she was admitted unconscious in April, the hospital was supposed to name her as Unknown April 15, 2026. I'm not sure if the hospital (social workers) tried to take her photo and post it on all social media platforms, requesting community to assist in locating the family."

Bongi Mabuya questioned:

"How is it that she was buried just a month after her passing? How many more missing persons are buried already that families do not know about?"

Missing Person South Africa extended its condolences to Asimbongekuhle's family and friends as they come to terms with the painful news.
