Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher will undergo surgery after sustaining a shoulder injury during a celebrity jet ski competition broadcast live on German television on Saturday, 30 August 2026.
Schumacher was competing in Stefan Raab's jet ski world championship, held at the regatta course in Duisburg, when the accident occurred during the team event. He had been driving the jet ski with Raab riding behind him when the pair crashed at a buoy. Both men initially climbed back aboard, but Schumacher accelerated before Raab had fully regained his position, causing a second fall into the water.
Shoulder Dislocated in the Water
As Schumacher attempted to pull himself back onto the jet ski, it became clear something was wrong. Speaking during the live broadcast on RTL+, he explained what had happened:
"My shoulder was dislocated when I tried to turn the jet ski around so quickly."
Raab, who had not immediately grasped the severity of the situation, described the moment he realised Schumacher was in trouble.

Medical staff at the event treated Schumacher on site before he was taken to BG Klinikum Duisburg for further assessment. On Sunday morning, he posted a video to Instagram thanking those who assisted him, saying the response had been "incredibly quick."
Bone Fracture Found After Scans
An X-ray on Saturday evening and an MRI scan on Sunday morning revealed the injury was more serious than first thought.
"It was only a shoulder dislocation, or a dislocated shoulder, but unfortunately a piece of bone broke off as well," Schumacher confirmed, adding that he would now require "a small operation."
